As parents begin to wade through the unchartered waters of having our kids at home during closures as a result of COVID-19, I wanted to share with you about the California State Parks PORTS program. If you have read my blog before, you know how much I love the work the PORTS program has been doing to bring the natural world inside classrooms. I am excited to share that the PORTS program is really stepping it up during this strange time!

First of all, what is PORTS? PORTS stands for Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students. They have been around for quite some time and it surprises me that more parents, teachers, and students do not know about them. I first heard about them several years back when I was asked to write PBL units for them. Since then I have been in LOVE with their work. The PORTS program works to bring the California State Parks to children in their classrooms through virtual field trips and video conferencing.

During this time they have stepped up their game! Here are some things they are offering kids and families:

  • Visit their Facebook page to join an event that will be hosted by a California State Parks Ranger. These live video conferences will bring the parks right into your living room.
  • 360 Degree Tours of California State parks. See this Google Doc for links to all of the tours.
  • Visit their YouTube Channel!

Of course these events are available as of now and could changed based on new guidelines and regulations regarding COVID-19.

Be sure to also visit the PORTS website!
